How to play Draw & Guess
Draw and Guess is Pictionary without the paper. One player gets a word and draws it; everyone else races to guess. It plays 2-10 people in 10-20 minutes, and the drawings are usually worse than anyone expects, which is the entire point.
- 1
Set rounds and a time limit
Choose how many rounds to play and how long each drawing gets. Shorter timers make for frantic, funnier drawings; longer ones let people actually attempt detail.
- 2
One player draws the secret word
The drawer is shown a word that nobody else sees. They draw it — no letters, no numbers, no speaking.
- 3
Everyone else guesses
The rest of the group calls out guesses while the drawing develops. Guessing early is worth more, so there is pressure not to wait for the picture to become obvious.
- 4
Score and pass the pen
Points go to whoever guesses correctly and to the drawer for being understood. The turn passes and a new player draws.
Tips and strategy
- Start with the overall shape, not the details. People recognise a silhouette long before they recognise an eyebrow.
- Draw the thing, not the scene. Adding background wastes time that you need for the actual word.
- If a guess is close, keep drawing rather than gesturing. Emphasising the part people are missing is faster than starting over.
- As a guesser, say everything out loud. Wrong guesses help other players triangulate.
- Arrows and circles are legal and enormously useful for pointing at the part that matters.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you play Draw and Guess?
- One player is given a secret word and draws it while the others guess. Points go to correct guessers and to the drawer. Play passes round so everyone draws.
- How many players do you need?
- Two at minimum, and it works up to about ten. Larger groups are livelier because more people are guessing at once.
- Can you write letters or numbers in your drawing?
- No. Writing the word, or any part of it, defeats the game. Arrows and circles to emphasise part of your drawing are fine.
- Do I need to be able to draw?
- Not remotely. Bad drawings produce better games than good ones, and the time limit means nobody has the chance to be precious about it.
