About Sounds Fishy

A bluffing game inspired by Fishbowl and Spyfall. Every round, all players see a trivia-style question — except one, the Fish, who only knows they're the Fish. Each player writes a short answer; the Fish has to fake plausibly. Answers are shown anonymously and everyone votes on who they think is the Fish. If the Fish is caught, the others score. If the Fish escapes, the Fish scores big. Bonus point if the Fish can guess what the real question was.

How a round plays out

  1. Question

Everyone (except the Fish) sees the question. The Fish only knows they are the Fish.

  2. Answer

Each player writes a short answer. The Fish has to bluff.

  3. Vote

Answers shown anonymously. Everyone votes on who they think is the Fish.

  4. Fish guesses

The Fish picks the real question from a list of 4 — correct guess = +1 bonus.

  5. Reveal

Fish caught → everyone who voted right scores +1. Fish escapes → Fish scores +2.

Roles

The Fish(1)
Sees only 'You are the Fish' — no question. Has to bluff an answer that sounds like it fits, then guess what the real question might have been for a bonus point.
Sniffers(all others)
See the real question. Write an answer that fits — but not so distinctly that the Fish can copy it. Vote on who the Fish is at the end of the round.

Tips for new players

Fish: stay generic
Pick an answer broad enough to fit many questions. "Something blue", "Mom", "Pizza" are safer than specifics.
Sniffers: don't over-explain
A long, perfect answer is suspicious — the Fish is trying to look like you.
Watch repeats
If two answers are identical, one is probably the Fish copying.
Fish: guess the question carefully
The +1 bonus is huge if you escaped — use the answers as clues to reconstruct the question.

What makes it interesting

The bluff is constrained by language. Answer too specifically and you out yourself as a non-Fish copy; answer too vaguely and you out yourself as the Fish. Open-ended questions ('something you find at a beach') leave room for genuine variety, which gives the Fish cover but also raises the bar for sniffers — they have to read tone, not just content.

Every word the Fish writes is evidence. Every word a Sniffer writes is also evidence — if their answer is too obvious, it tells the Fish exactly what the question must be about.
